Canada Day Wines: My Current Ontario Patio Sippers

With Canada Day coming and going. I find myself this summer sipping on more local wines than normal. It is a combination of things really- having visited a few wineries in the last few weeks, but also, an overwhelming request when it comes to events to taste Ontario wines. And, why not? Here is what I have been drinking lately from our own backyard:

Husband and wife who left their corporate jobs to run a winery- just 10 acres of vines! You can't get their wines at the LCBO but it is worth the visit.

Their Smitten Sparkling is delicious, riesling grapes made the charmat method (aka tank method) this is an off-dry sparkling that goes down smooth on a hot summer day. A good amount of acidity from the grape varietal makes this a balanced wine that is crisp and delicious! Only $24.95 a bottle.

Their Rosé aptly called Rose Coloured Glasses is a vibrant pink that smells like a watermelon jolly ranch candy. On the palate this wine boasts strawberries and lemon peel. A delicious treat to be savoured with some grilled salmon on the BBQ. Only $19.95 a bottle.

An adorable winery with an outdoor patio that takes shade under the vines! If you haven't visited yet, then make the trip!

The Aria Sparkling Rosé is light and refreshing, with raspberry and cranberry on the nose and palate, this is the first rosé they have made, and it doesn't disappoint! Made with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, a great sparkling to celebrate just about any day of the week. Only $28.95

The Big Fork Red is a Cab Franc and Merlot blend that has deep and ripe red fruit on the palate with a hint of purple flower, vanilla and herbs. A delicious red wine to pair with any grilled meat or even a juicy burger. Only $21.95

Owner Martin Malivoire was a director of special effects before purchasing Moira vineyard in Beamsville. They make some amazing rosés- three to be exact. Most you can find at select LCBOs.

Lady Bug Rosé is a deep rose colour and has the nose of candied strawberries and a hint of pink grapefruit, this dry rosé is versatile and quite tasty. Only $16.95

Vivant Rosé is refreshingly tart with hints of citrus and wet stone. A Provençal style rosé made with Pinot Noir grapes, this is light and refreshing, and pairs excellently with soft cheeses and fresh seafood. Only $19.95

If you haven't made it out to visit some local gems in our own backyard, I encourage you to try it. Want to learn more about Ontario wine? Why not host your own wine event, with me, and learn more! Contact me
