Happy Halloween: A Mulled Wine Recipe for the Ghoulish Day!

mulled wine

Let’s face it: we all get red wine gifted to us that is just not to our taste. It sits on the shelf until it is re-gifted or someone visits you and you try to serve it, hoping they won’t say anything! For me, its ALWAYS Apothic Red or Cupcake - there is a lot I could say about these mass produced, well marketed wines, but the polite sommelier in me will bite my tongue. If it gives you any idea for how I really feel about them, they are usually the bottles that end up in my mulled wine recipe. With the weather finally getting colder, and many people hosting a Halloween bash this weekend- here is my go to recipe for mulled wine- that will warm you up, from the inside out: Happy Halloween!

What You will Need:

1-2 bottles of cheap, medium to full bodied red wine

1 orange

2-3 cinnamon sticks

2-3 cloves

4 whole star anise

½ cup of brandy

½ cup of sugar (more if you like it really sweet)

Directions:

1. Slice up the oranges into ¼ inch slices then cut them again in four- this makes for a nice presentation.

2. In a crock-pot, add all of the ingredients, stir to combine and dissolve the sugar, and set on low.

3. Stir occasionally.

4. Once warm through, set to “Keep Warm” setting to avoid burning off all the alcohol.

5. Enjoy!

Mulled wine is easy to make, and a great crowd pleaser on a cold night. The crock-pot is really the way to go. I have made this on the stove, but the problem is temperature wise, it can get too warm and then you burn off all the alcohol in the wine and brandy.
